well when your cat does something out of the ordinary it means something is terribly wrong.
your cat might have anal infection of some sort. did you notice any blood where he passes stool?
he might associate the litter box with pain while excreting and wouldn’t use it.
you should take him to the vet to be examined properly.

All I did with our cat was scratch his feet in the cat litter. We only ever had one tray – and never any accidents.
Did you try taking the poop and putting it in the litter pan?
I did this with my one cat after a couple times he got the hint!
