How can I stop the cat litter tray from smelling so badly?
My cat has had a litter of 4 kittens. The kittens live upstairs in my sons’ bedroom but the cat litter box is downstairs in a bathroom with the door closed because it smells to badly despite me regularly cleaning it. I can’t put it upstairs with my sons for hygeine and because of the smell (my children are very young). How can I stop it from smelling, and also should I think about putting all the kittens in the downstairs bathroom in a box with warm blankets etc. so Mum can show the kittens how to use the tray. (My cat is being spayed once kittens have gone – which I’m dreading cos they’re adorable!).

Hey,
I have a kitten, so I know just how much cat wee and poop really smells. If you would like to stop the tray smelling, first make sure that you have ventilation in the area where the litter tray is. For my kitten I use a type of cat litter called Cat-San, which is cat litter crystals that quickly absorb urine giving it less time to smell. It is more expensive than other litters though. To keep Oscar’s litter box fresh I clean it when I notice that he has pooped in there- which really reduces the smell. I also spray a bit of good quality air freshener around the litter box and in the room. The litter tray itself should be scrubbed with hot water and soap about one to two times a month.
It is probably a good idea to put your kittens and their mother in the same room as the litter tray so that it is easier for them to use. If you want to change to another cat litter do it gradually by mixing a bit of the new little in with the old litter so the cats get used to it.
Does your downstairs bathroom have a window? If not you’re just trapping all of the odors and that’s why it won’t go away. Cat pee is very potent stuff (as well as kitten poops..worst smell ever.)
I used a cat litter that was VERY good at keeping odors away, it contained baking soda to absorb smells. (Mix both of those products together, you should be good to go.)
Just use better Kitty littter. Buy the fine one that smells like baby powder and looks and feels like sand. It is much more expensive than the regular ones, but you will need less. And best of all: No more smell.
Cat urine is very strong and difficult to keep under control. Here are a few tips that have helped me:
1. Adding baking soda to the litter box.
2. Putting an air ionizer near the litter box.
3. Using clumping litter so that the urine clumps and can be removed more easily.
4. Cleaning out the litter box 2x daily (yeah it’s a pain)
5. And finally, it’s more expensive than traditional cat litter but I just bought a cat litter called "World’s Best" which is made from corn! It took the cats a little time to get used to it so I mixed it 50/50 with the old litter until they adjusted.
It really works well at absorbing the odors and not releasing them. It’s also dust free and is flushable (although I haven’t tried that).
Hope this helps!
