worried about baby safety! baby & cat litter tray….?
Hiya, I’m currently pregnant, due 5th April. I’m just worried about how to keep my baby away from the cat’s litter tray? He’s always been and indoor cat and I’m not going to change that. I know I have a little while before baby is crawling/walking but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?? The litter tray is kept in my hall, near my front door.

I keep my cats litter box in a small dog kennel, it helps keep my daughter out of it!
Can you get one of those covered trays that has a door? That is what we have. We’ll still have to watch our son…but it would be much harder if we had an open tray. Also maybe move the tray to a bathroom/laundry room so it isn’t as noticeable.
Is there a laundry room or bathroom you can move it into?
We have ours in our bathroom downstairs and then have put up a baby gate. At first it was because our beagle liked the box a little too much…(ew!) but now Noah is learning to crawl so it’ll be nice to keep him out of there too.
Or there is the old standby of redirecting your baby’s attention when he/she does get close to the box. However that can get tiring and I know I cannot watch my son 24/7.
Cat’s feces can carry some really harmful bacteria and the like that are very dangerous for even young school age children. I heard that it can even kill them, but I really don’t know the specifics.
My neighbours recently got a cat for their five year old’s birthday, and they had to take the sweet little girl back because their were worried about her three year old sister, because she still hasn’t reached the age where she doesn’t stick her fingers in her mouth all the time.
So, if you are living with a spouse or a partner or anyone, I suggest you ask them to clean the litter box, and then thoroughly wash their hands and the area around the box, for the baby’s safety.
In my house, our litterbox is beside our garage, down a tiny flight of stairs off the kitchen. This wouldn’t be the safest for a baby, of course.
How about moving the litterbox into your garage, with a cat flap? With this you must be sure that the garage always stays closed, and only open it when you need to. This could also cause problems if you have a car that is used regularly in the garage, but if you’re like my family and only put junk and garbage in there, it should be fine.
my suggestion would be to move the tray to the basement or the bathroom where you can keep the door closed if you cant do that then I would think the best move would to be getting one of those littler pans that has a dome cover on top of it so it makes it harder for baby to get into it
you should keep your litter box somewhere where you can close the door….the cat wont constantly need to use it, and if it gets used to where it is it will learn to stand at the door and meow for you to open it….i have cats also and they will let you kno that they need to use the bathroom if they cant get to it right away….just be sure you pay attention, because they will pee on things if they dont get to the litter box….
We put ours in the laundry room and put a baby gate in the doorway. The cat can jump the gate, but the baby can’t get in.
